Gabriel Frangione on D-Day, June 6th, 1944
Gabriel's unit landed on the beaches at Normandy toward the later part of the day at Omaha Beach. Earlier in the day the U.S. had suffered tremendous casualties in the initial landings. By the time that his unit arrived the fighting was still intense, but the U.S. had begun to turn the tide of the battle.

When they landed the results of the earlier battle were all around them. There were scores of dead bodies floating in the water and lots of damaged equipment. Gabriel and the other engineers were able to run from their landing craft and make it safely to an area off the beach while the fighting was still going on. His engineering unit would then organize and help clear some of the beach obstacles.

At the time of the battle the dead bodies and the carnage on the beach did not phase Gabriel as he had a job to do. However, years later these images would come to haunt him.

Today, he says the true heroes at Omaha Beach were the guys who gave their lives. He wants the families of these fallen soldiers to know that.
When Gabriel was asked if he has HBO and if he has watched The Pacific, he answered that he does have HBO, and his wife watches The Pacific, but he will stay in another room while it is on. He has no desire to watch war on television. He saw enough of it first hand 66 years ago.
