Guy Izzo was the talk of the town in 1954 when he hit a record 21 Home Runs. The record still stands today | |||||
| One of the most remembered feats from the early days of Raritan Little League is Guy Izzo’s record 21 home runs in the 1954 season. It is still a record today that has never been challenged. The distance of some of his home runs is now legendary. Some homers did not just clear the fence, but they cleared the railroad tracks as well. One homer hit a moving train. It was said that one nervous owner of a building just beyond the railroad tracks would ask as to when Guy was playing. This was so that he could board up his windows to avoid them being broken by another Izzo blast. The local newspapers followed Guy Izzo’s accomplishments in 1954. There were several articles and photos about him. In addition to the 21 homers, Guy also batted over .700. However, when it came to MVP honors, he was snubbed, as the MVP that year went to rival Walter Dembiec. Guy Izzo today owns and operates Gaetano’s Beauty Salon on Somerset Street in Raritan. | |||||
